The Royal Rumble kicked off with a six-way tornado rules Cruiserweight title match, with Kid Kash defending against Funaki, Jamie Noble, Nunzio, Paul London and the surprise entrant, Gregory Helms. Helms pinned Funaki with a shining wizard to become the new CW champion. Decent opener, although a few blown moves.
- HHH and Randy Orton drew their numbers for the Rumble. Orton liked his number, HHH didn’t like his. Strong hint that Hunter is opening the Rumble.
- Mickie James beat Ashley after a botched top rope powerbomb. The match lasted around 5 minutes, and the crowd were booing fairly loudly towards the end.
- Boogeyman pinned JBL in a really short match, which made sense to hide Boogeyman’s weaknesses.
- More people drew their Rumble numbers. MNM told Vince they’d take out Shawn Michaels for him.
- The Spirit Squad interrupted Lilian Garcia as she explained the rules for the Royal Rumble. They did their thing and thankfully left Lilian to continue with the rules for the Rumble match, which is up now. Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler are calling the Rumble.
Royal Rumble Match:
Triple H was announced as #1 with Rey Mysterio at #2. Rey Rey came out in Eddie’s low-rider.
#3 was Simon Dean, who was double teamed and quickly eliminated before Psicosis came in at #4, only to be dumped out after a minute by Mysterio. Ric Flair at #5, who came out to a huge pop and went straight for HHH. They traded blows and chops before Flair was backdropped out of the ring just as #6 was announced, him being Big Show.
#7 was Jonathan Coachman, who lasted around 10 seconds before being eliminated by Big Show, who then continued his attack on HHH as Mysterio watched on. #8 was Lashley, who hit a modified backdrop on Big Show and kicked him under the bottom rope to the floor before taking out HHH and Mysterio. #9 was Kane, who got a huge pop too as he squared up to Lashley.
Sylvan came in at #10 and lasted less than The Coach before Lashley eliminated him. Lashley then turned around into a double chokeslam from Show and Kane, who then eliminated him. Kane and Show then squared up as Cole and Lawler put over the “every man for himself” element. HHH sneaked up on them from behind and eliminated the both of them as #11 was announced as Carlito.
Carlito, HHH and Mysterio currently left in the ring.
#12 was Chris Benoit, who cleaned house before HHH took it to him. #13 was announced as the US Champion, Booker T. He and Benoit went at it right away, with Benoit tossing him over the top rope to the outside in less than a minute. #14 was Joey Mercury of MNM, who went for Carlito as Benoit battled with HHH. #15 was then announced as Tatanka, who came out to no reaction whatsoever. #16 was Nitro from MNM who got chopped down by Tatanka.
These 90 second entrances are being shortened, for those who like to pay attention to stats.
HHH, Mysterio, Carlito, Benoit, MNM, Tatanka currently in the ring.
#17 was Trevor Murdoch, with #18 Eugene. They went at it with the returning Eugene doing the same gimmick as before. Mysterio hit them with a double bulldog. #19 was Road Warrior Animal, who clotheslined MNM and just about hit a powerslam on Triple H.
#20 was the return of Rob Van Dam, who got a huge ovation and proceeded to hit half of those in the ring with spin kicks. He them backdropped Animal to eliminate him as #21 was announced as Orlando Jordan. The crowd are going nuts for RVD.
Chavo Guerrero came out at #22, bringing the chants for Eddie Guerrero with him. He went for Mysterio which seemed to momentarily stop any crowd reaction. He went up top for a Frog Splash but HHH pushed him off the turnbuckle, eliminating him quickly. #23 was Matt Hardy who took out MNM as RVD tried to eliminate Triple H. MNM then double teamed Tatanka to eliminate him.
Super Crazy came out at #24, closedly followed by a huge ovation for Shawn Michaels at #25.
Michaels, HHH, Mysterio, Carlito, MNM, Murdoch, RVD, Matt Hardy, Eugene, Orlando Jordan, Benoit and Super Crazy all currently in the ring.
Michaels quickly eliminated Trevor Murdoch as #26 was announced as Chris Masters and #27 as Viscera. Viscera elimiated Matt Hardy as #28 was quickly announced as Shelton Benjamin. Chris Benoit eliminated Eugene before Goldust made his return at #29 (if he impresses tonight, he may get offered a contract).
Randy Orton was last in at #30 to a mixed reaction. He went straight for Benoit and dumped him over the top rope to the floor. Carlito and Masters teamed up to eliminate Viscera before Carlito eliminated Masters. RVD then hit a heel kick on Goldust which sent him over the top rope as Orton eliminated Orlando Jordan.
Orton and RVD went at it as Carlito and Benjamin fought to eliminate each other. MNM double teamed Shawn Michaels and went for the snapshot but Michaels fought back and eliminated them both before turning into a kick to the head from Shelton Benjamin. Benjamin and Michaels traded blows before Michaels superkicked Benjamin over the top rope, eliminating him.
Vince McMahon’s music played, and the boss came to ringside, distracting Shawn and allowing Shane McMahon to jump him from behind and toss Michaels over the top rope. Michaels ran back into the ring but HHH tried to hit him with a pedigree. Michaels blocked it and supkicked Hunter before chasing after Shane McMahon, who fled backstage.
HHH, Mysterio, Carlito, RVD, and Orton are still in.
RVD eliminated Carlito, leaving HHH, Mysterio, Orton and RVD. Mysterio and RVD teamed up to hit some sweet double team moves on HHH and then Orton. RVD got caught on the turnbuckles by HHH, who then used Mysterio as a weapon of sorts, sending him crashing into RVD, who fell to the outside, leaving just three.
Orton and HHH double teamed Mysterio, who fought back and hit a double 619 before nailing Orton with a springboard. HHH took Mysterio down but then walked into an RKO attempt which he managed to block. HHH tried to eliminate Mysterio but as they jockeyed for position ont he ropes, Mysterio sent Hunter over the top, eliminating him and leaving just Mysterio and Orton in the ring.
Hunter dragged Mysterio to the outside and tossed him into the steps before rolling him back into the ring for Orton. Orton picked him up and attempted to throw Rey over the top rope, but Rey reversed it and sent Orton flying over the top rope with a headscissors!
The winner of the Royal Rumble, Rey Mysterio! Huge ovation for the win as Cole put over how Mysterio will headline Wrestlemania 22 and how he did it for Eddie (which actually makes sense in how quickly Chavo was eliminated to keep the focus on this). Good Rumble match.
- A video package showing highlights from past Wrestlemania’s aired before Rey was shown backstage with Benoit, Chavo and Dean Malenko, celebrating Rey’s win in memory of Eddie. Edge interrupted, telling Rey to keep away from his title.
WWE Title Match - Edge © vs John Cena:
- Cena’s entrance was huge. Tons of pyro, streamers, and a platform that lowered down from the rig above the set which Cena appeared on. Edge made his entrance, the match got started, and the huge pops for Cena quickly disappeared. Joey Styles on commentary tried to put over that Cena was responsible for RAW’s huge ratings. Edge speared Cena into the steps on the outside before dumping him into the crowd as the women and children in the crowd tried to get behind the challenger.
Edge went for a superplex but Cena blocked it and went for a top rope legdrop which he missed. Edge made the cover for a two count. Cena went for an FU which was avoided. They did a series of near falls before Edge locked in a sleeper and applied a body scissors at the same time. Cena eventually powered out of it and hit a DDT to make his comeback, which was met with a very mixed reaction. Lita interfered but it backfired, allowing Cena to hit Edge with an FU and then lock in the STF, forcing Edge to tap out.
Winner and new WWE Champion: John Cena.
Backstage, Todd Grisham asked Edge about his “I won’t be a transitional champion” comments. Edge got pissed off and left, leaving Lita and Todd. Hacksaw Jim Duggan appeared on “behalf of John Cena” to call Lita a HOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark Henry headlines a PPV next.
World Heavyweight Championship: Kurt Angle © vs Mark Henry
- Time is already against Angle and Henry going into this, although it was never going to be a long match. No reaction for Henry’s entrance at all, and no danger of the good guy being booed in this one. Plenty of stalling to start things out before Henry dominated with his power. Daivari interfered to assist on the outside as Henry distracted the referee.
Henry locked in a bearhug for what seemed like an eternity which killed the crowd. He then went for a slam but Angle quickly rolled into an Ankle lock. Henry kicked Angle off, and then blocked an attempted Angle Slam before Angle managed to hit a German Suplex before following it up with an Angle Slam for a near fall. Angle locked in the Ankle lock once again but Henry powered out, causing a ref bump in the process. Angle went to the outside to get a chair and nailed Daivari with it. Henry blocked a chairshot at first but Angle hit him with a lowblow before nailing him twice, hard, with the chair for a near fall as the referee came around.
Angle exposed the middle turnbuckle as the referee was still dazed and tossed Henry into it before rolling him up to get the win. Brutually painful to watch, despite Angle’s best efforts to get anything close to a wrestling match out of Henry.
Winner and still champion: Kurt Angle
Post-match, The Undertaker returned, flanked by druids. He signalled that he wanted Angle’s belt around his waist before “causing” fireworks to ignite above the ring and lightning to strike the turnbuckles posts, which in turn caused the ring to collapse. Pretty cool visual to end the show.
