Has The Impact of World Wrestling Entertainment Founder, Vince McMahon, Been Overlooked?
LOS ANGELES, CA, (NAMC) - When the topic of professional wrestling is brought up, the one comment that you can bank on is "Wrestling is Fake". Of course we all know now that wrestling is a staged performance but hasn’t it always been?
That is no big secret, the question today is, has the contributions of Vince McMahon to pop culture been overlooked?
If you look back to when professional wrestling had various territories and several different organizations, from the American Wrestling Alliance and the National Wrestling Alliance to the World Wide Wrestling Federation, wrestling was what it was. That all changed when a bright young man, who was born into the wrestling business, took control of his fathers business and created a legacy. Vincent McMahon Sr. could never have imagined the heights that his son was going to reach.
McMahon changed the face of pro wrestling and created what is known as Sports Entertainment. He developed various characters, which in some cases became pure entertainment superstars, such as Hulk Hogan, Jesse "The Body" Ventura and The Rock.
The talent that he created has drawn millions of fans to arenas on an international scale; he has made millionaires of athletes that would not have reach those heights in any other situation. He created a multi-million dollar industry which he and he alone controls and there are no signs of that changing anytime in the near future, though many have tried and failed, case in point Ted Turners "World Championship Wrestling" venture.
What he has done to Sports Entertainment is the equivalent to what Bill Gates has done to the computer software industry, with one major difference, there is little to no competition in the Sports Entertainment industry.
There is no question that Vince McMahon is an innovator and he may be criticized for storylines that the World Wrestling Entertainment creates but no one can ever dispute his success or his contribution to pop culture.
He has created pop culture icons that will transcend time and they sit right up there with the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley, Madonna, Michael Jackson and even Superman.
So as they put together the list of pop culture icons they may consider putting in Vince McMahon as the creator of some of pop cultures most recognized Sports Entertainment icons.
