This was from just after the SummerSlam press conference that just aired
in Canada on The Score.
Q. How did you know that putting shows on PPV would be the key to
business success, when very few other people realized it?
A. Says he took a page out of boxing, and says he was involved with his
dad, says it was a natural evolution.
Q. Says WrestleMania is now viewed as a big success, how big of a
gamble was it?
A. Says he has been involved in a number of gambles, and says it is
important in life to gamble, and they should be calculated risks. Says
WM was huge risk and it payed off.
Q. Talks about Big Event in 86 in Toronto, asks him if it was unoffical
the first SummerSlam.
A. He said it could of been. It was an extraordinary event. Canada is
extremly important market. He looks at Canada and the US as one.
Q. How suprised were you to look around in see that many people in
attendence.
A. Says Canadian fans always amaze him. They always turn out and have
passion, and they always let you know what they are feeling, unlike
Americans.
Q. Says Heenan/Okerlund were recently on their show, promoting 24/7, he
asks him to talk about what he did for their careers and the entire
industry in general. Was the 80s boom a result of the talent you brought
in? or were they in the right place at the right time?
A. Says it was a combination of things, back then they competing with
everyone. They were the first one to compete with all of them at the
same time. He says they need TV and talent. Talent being #1.
Q. Talks about SummerSlam with Hogan being front and centre. Asks if
was the single most important talent.
A. Says it is hard to say. Says Hogan was important for them to knock
down barries that had not been knocked down before. He became a cross
over icon and legend. Says as impressive as Hogan was, Austin came and
shattered Hogan's records. Says there be some else someday that breaks
his records.
Q. What was it about Hogan that specifically allowed him to be that
cross over icon?
A. Hogan personified what Vince was trying to present in terms of sports
entertainment. He was a big man. He had a gift of gab. There was no
place where you could not take him. Says he was a magnet for drawing
attention. Says they could not be where they are today without him.
Q. Asks if 24/7 is a way to reach back to an audience that grew up
watching but no longer watches
A. Says 24/7 will allow for a number of things. It will allow them to
revisit special moments of the past, it also allows opens up to a new
younger audience out have never had seen the older wrestlers.
Q. Talks about them having a 75,000 library, do you ever step back and
think about all of the programming and really appreciate the impact you
have had
A. Says he doesn't take many steps back, he is too busy looking at the
present and the future. Says he always frustrated, and will die
frustrated because he never gets done what he wants to get done.
Q. Asks if much of the 75,000 hours only aired once.
A. Once of the pieces of their success is that they don't take time off.
Says they just passed Gunsmoke.
Q. Asks if they lost any programing over the years.
A. Says they lost some. Not all of the film was keep up to date.
Q. Highly successful people often point to competition as a driving
force. Asks him how much has business change for him personally with no
competition.
A. Says they do have competition. With other TV shows and the internet,
and game boys. Says there is so much diversion for peoples attention.
Q. Talks about Vince's recent meeting with Bret Hart. Asks him about he
would describe that meeting.
A. He would describe it as hopeful and warm. He hugged Bret, a hug that
he really meant. Says it is time for bygones to be bygones. He does not
know if they will ever agree on cetain things, but it is nice to be able
to politely disagree. Says Bret has given the WWE so much. Says he is
hopefully that the DVD is a new beginning of brand new relationship.
Hopes that their new releationship will be even bigger than it ever was.
Q. Did you get a different sense from him at the meeting?
A. Says Bret is more reserved then he is. She he will speak his mind.
Says if you can go through some rough times and still stay together and
make that bond stronger then you always really did have a relationship.
Says the number one thing that he and Bret agree on is that they do
everything for their audience.
