Triple H and Stephanie McMahon appeared on the Wednesday, February 16th episode of "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch" on CNBC. Triple H has always tried to avoid the subject of being the son-in-law of the boss in media interviews, and on the few occasions where it has been brought up he has actually portrayed it as a negative thing for his push, such as when he said on the Conan O'Brien show, "It's really hard because if you're having problems with the wife at home, then those problems carry over to work and affect your job."
After trying to avoid the subject of being the son-in-law of the boss in all interviews up to this point, this would be the interview in which Triple H would finally have to talk about it at length. Not only that, but Stephanie McMahon would be on the show too. How honest would Triple H be? How honest would Stephanie be? How would Triple H's behavior change (if at all) when sitting next to Stephanie for an interview?
In the first segment, it was just Donny Deutsch and Triple H, with no Stephanie. Deutsch asked about a lot of things, but he seemed to be genuinely fascinated with the idea of marrying into the family business and becoming the son-in-law of someone like Vince McMahon, and kept bringing up that subject. Triple H seemed uncomfortable with the subject, and the first words out of his mouth on the subject were that he was already one of the biggest-drawing stars in the company before he ever started dating Stephanie.
When Deutsch brought up the subject again later in the segment, Triple H said that he and Stephaine were married and divorced in TV storylines before they ever started dating in real life. Triple H also said (and this one is a real doozy) that he hears some people say that Triple H has an unfair business advantage because he has Vince's ear 24/7, but in fact Vince McMahon never wants to talk about business with him. He actually said with a straight face that he and Vince just work out together sometimes and meet at family functions, but they never talk about business. If there were a laugh track on "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch," now would be the time to press the "laugh" button.
After a commercial break, Stephanie McMahon joined Triple H and Donnie Deutsch for another full-length segment, and the first thing that jumped out at me is that Stephanie has had A LOT of plastic surgery on her face since the last time she appeared on WWE TV. And it's not just the facial plastic surgery that has been documented on awfulplasticsurgery.com; she looks to have had a lot more plastic surgery than that. Triple H's demeanor also changed a bit when Stephanie came out, as he was very subservient to her, letting her answer, letting her dominate the conversation. The question with Stephanie joining the show is whether she would protect her husband with lies and half-truths, and what her response would be to the hilarious statement that Triple H never talks about business with Vince McMahon.
The answer to that question came very quickly. Stephanie quickly said that she is sometimes used as a sounding board by Triple H, and she often wonders why Triple H and Vince McMahon refuse to talk business with one another. Donny Deutsch said at this point, only half-jokingly, "I don't believe that," as even a non-wrestling-fan could smell a certain amount of BS in the air. Stephanie said that Vince and Triple H are never on the same page and that Vince never wants to talk about business with Hunter, and Triple H chimed in, "And a lot of times, I don't either." Stephanie said that the fans really call the shots, and that they always let the audience tell them what to do and who to push on top.
With the hilarity at a fever pitch, one had to wonder how it could possibly get worse. Deutsch had previously asked Triple H what he would say to a parent who came up to him and said that their child was imitating the actions of DX and saying "suck it" all the time, and Triple had replied that he would say, "Be a parent." When asked the same question, Stephanie said that they have scaled back the edginess a lot, but even at its worst point they never denigrated women. Stephanie added, "I really believe that," just for good measure. Let me repeat that: Stephanie McMahon said, without immediately bursting into laughter right after saying it, that she doesn't believe WWE has ever denigrated women.
In other highlights from the interview, Triple H said that the key to pro wrestling is the personalities and that most of the entertainers' on-air personalities are just their real-life personalities with the volume turned way up to 100. (He used the term "entertainers" instead of "wrestlers."). When asked where the ideas come from, Triple H said that the entertainers have a big role in the creative process because nobody knows their personalities better than they do. He also said that they have a creative team just like any other form of entertainment with characters, storylines, etc.
Deutsch also asked why there isn't more of a hip-hop influence in pro wrestling, to which Triple H replied, "We've got a guy for that, we've got a character named John Cena." When asked whether he thinks of himself more like a movie star or a football player with what he does, Triple H said that it's a bit of both. He said that he's like a movie star who does all of his own stunts for over 200 days per year, and also like a football player except, "There is no back-up Triple H if I get turf toe or something like that."
All in all, a fascinating interview because Donny Deutsch would not leave the son-in-law subject alone, and it was truly astounding to hear Triple H and Stephanie say the things that they said.
