SURVIVOR SERIES is the second oldest annual Pay Per View event in WWE's history, after WrestleMania® itself (WrestleMania 21 will be in Los Angeles on April 3, 2005 - Staples Center). Starting in 1987 at The Richfield Coliseum, in Richfield, OH this unprecedented event returns to the state where it got its start being the only other PPV event to be held that year SURVIVOR SERIES was one of only five annual PPV's (with Mania, SummerSlam®, Royal Rumble® and King of the Ring®) that WWE produced and fans were hailing this event all over the world!!!
What makes this event so special is the combination of both WWE brands, RAW® and SmackDown!(TM) In the same ring at the same event. The SURVIVOR SERIES events were originally held on Thanksgiving night from 1987-1990 which made it special unto itself. Starting in 1991, WWE made the decision to host this event on Thanksgiving Eve, which lasted only 3 years. It was not until 1995 that it became a regular, Sunday-night PPV.
Another key element of SURVIVOR SERIES is the unique format of having all tag team elimination matches, in which teams of four or five wrestlers face off and try to eliminate the entire opposing team, one by one. This continued for years, and it was not until the mid to late 1990s that this format was phased out in favor of a more traditional setup. Nowadays, there is still usually one or two elimination matches as a tribute to the original format.
