SummerSlam at the ACC Aug. 15 boost for tourism
Superstars anxious to put on show for passionate fans
A lineup of wrestling superstars is braced to help get Toronto's economy off the mat this summer.
World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has announced the Air Canada Centre as the site of this year's SummerSlam pay-per-view event on Sunday, Aug. 15.
"Our fans in Canada are extremely passionate and that was one of the primary reasons we decided to bring SummerSlam to Toronto this year," said WWE boss Vince McMahon at a press conference attended by several wrestling personalities, including Triple H, Trish Stratus and Eddie Guerrero.
The event, which will be seen in more than 100 countries and broadcast in 13 languages, will generate "significant revenue" for the city, added McMahon.
Wrestlemania X-8, held in March 2002, attracted 68,237 fans, shattered SkyDome attendance and box office records and generated publicity for Toronto around the world, said deputy mayor Mike Feldman. SummerSlam "will undoubtedly help boost our economy and tourism after last year's setbacks," he said.
SummerSlam is one of four pay-per-view events each year that feature talent from the rosters of both Monday Night RAW and SmackDown!
This marks only the second time the event has been held outside of the United States — the first was in 1992 when it was held in the UK.
Tickets, $35 to $400, go on sale Saturday at the Air Canada Centre box office, www.ticketmaster.ca, 416-870-8000 or 416-872-5000.
Toronto Tourism is also offering a package that includes a ticket to SummerSlam, one night's hotel accommodation, a three-course meal at a top Toronto restaurant and admission to one of the city's attractions. For more information visit www.tourismtoronto.com.
