There was a huge controversy last night backstage at the SmackDown! tapings. This just goes to show how bad the SmackDown! locker-room actually is these days. Several people on the SmackDown! roster have told us that Michael Hayes rubbed a ton of people the wrong way last night and left many people disgruntled.
Hayes tried over and over again yesterday to have John Cena hit the FU on Chris Benoit during their tag team match at the tapings last night. The problem was, Hayes was the only guy who thought this should be done. Everyone else in the company knows that Cena needs a huge babyface push and is way over with the fans right now.
Hayes side of the story was that if Cena FUed Benoit at the end of their tag match, he would look more like a Steve Austin character who didnt give a damn about anyone or anything. The entire writing team was solid behind the idea of having the two team up and leaving it at that.
The talent who is participating in the Survivor Series match were also behind the writing team as they felt it would hurt Cenas current push and would confuse many of the fans going into Survivor Series if he performed the FU.
The idea appeared to have been settled and everything was cool until Hayes ran into Vince McMahon backstage later in the day. Vince McMahon liked the idea that Hayes had and went through with it, thus changing the SmackDown! script. Hayes was then heard telling people that it was Vince McMahon who wanted Cena to do the FU and not him, but may people told Hayes to go to hell and that it was him who got the change made.
What makes matters worse is that there is a distinct feeling among people at Smackdown that it was extremely suspicious that Hayes, who is a writer for the Raw brand, was pushing for the finish given the effect that it could have on a major player on the Smackdown roster.
The end result of this entire thing was that after the tag match, the fans sat there in complete shock as to what had happened. They were left wondering if Cena was a heel or face.
This is the second incident Hayes has been involved in within the past several weeks. He made a complete a-- out of himself at the Stephanie McMahon-Triple H wedding reception by getting up on stage and singing a rendition of Jailhouse Rock.
