WWE and their publishing partner, Simon and Schuster, recently published "WWE Unscripted", just in time for the holiday shopping season.
The book, from the creators of Michael Jordan's bestselling Rare Air: Michael on Michael and NBA at 50 gives a behind-the-scenes look at the performers of WWE. It shows life on the road where WWE talent travels 200 days per year to performing in front of crowds all over North America, Europe, and Asia...and gives a look at the lives of WWE performers in their own words.
This book features incredible photography of WWE talent both in front of the camera, and in places that readers will be surprised to see them. If this book were about any other form of entertainment, it'd be considered a must-buy coffee table book for any house. Even given the obvious limitations of mainstream views toward professional wrestling, its performers and fans, "WWE Unscripted" is still a book for wrestling fans to show their friends...and for those who seek a real look into the real people behind an sometimes unreal business.
For "smart" fans, there are no major revelations that you haven't seen in the Wrestling Observer or in mainstream press articles...but the book casts an interesting light on aspects of the real-life human being behind the larger-than-life personalities of WWE talent...some that are amusing, and others that will make you shake your head in amazement.
One picture that stood out for me was one smaller picture of Paul Levesque and Stephanie McMahon. Many wrestling fans (including yours truly) have strong opinions regarding the influence of Levesque on the tone of WWE, and regarding Stephanie McMahon's influence on the current product as the head of the WWE creative writing team. These pictures and stories won't do anything to change some critical feelings.
But this particular picture shows a simple picture of two people backstage at an unnamed WWE TV production in a busy hallway..looking at each other with a twinkle in their eyes that shows their very real love for one another. Stories in the book suggest that the way to their marriage wasn't easy, particularly given Vince McMahon misgivings about what their relationship would do to and for WWE's business. Eventually, though, love won out...and Vince McMahon dropped his objections.
Other interesting stories shown include:
-A rare look at Mark Callaway as the Undertaker...and as husband to a very unique woman who is an expert on boxing and who loves UFC
-Shane McMahon and wife Marissa as people who enjoy the variety and relative anonymity of New York City
-Glen (Kane) Jacobs as a former St. Louis junior high teacher
-Vince McMahon mugging in a picture shot in his home...with his dog
-Booker (T) Huffman's real beginnings and a trip back to his old home neighborhood
-A wrestling career and real-life changes for Michael (Shawn Michaels) Hickenbottom, including his experience as a born-again Christian
-Eddie Guerrero's thoughts on handling his addiction to alcohol and painkillers
-Terri Runnels life as a single mom, and having to manage what her daughter does and doesn't see her mother do on TV
-The real life challenges that the road causes to relationships, including some revealing comments by Amy (Lita) Dumas
-Jim Ross talking about "disgruntled guys that didn't make it for whatever reason... that were eating somas like they were M&Ms...had to have a 6 or 12 pack at night...and a girlfriend on the road
-Numerous members of the WWE roster talking about injuries and the very real pain of being a full-time worker in their business
These stories and many more, make this book well worth the read...
